The Carver County Historical Society hosts The Unchosen Ones touring exhibition November 22, 2024 to January 10, 2025. I stopped in today to view the exhibition and talk with the staff and enjoyed my time in Waconia, Minnesota a short drive from Minneapolis. Several youth from the project were from Carver County, and the fairgrounds where I began principle photography in 2016 was a few blocks away. This was the first venue that hung the portraits from the ceiling and I thought it made good use of the space— I give this curatorial and installation freedom to all my venues, since they know their space and audience best. Thank you to Wendy Petersen Biorn, Jeremy Murray, and Jayna Hulleman for your support!

Minnesota Tamil Sangam Portraits | MSP Exhibition
For the next year, my portraits of artists from the Minnesota Tamil Sangam will be on exhibition at the Minneapolis-St.Paul airport. The artists celebrated in the portrait are Aditya Nandhiyar, Kamatchi Sureshkumar, Manigandan Jayaraman, Nirmal Sundhar, Prasanna Gajavarathan, Rohini Balamurugan, Sanjay Govindasamy, Saravanan Durairajan, Shanker Narayan, Tamil Kadir Rajavel, Trisha Sebastin, Velmurugan Marimuthu, Vijaya manikandan Mohana Vijayan, and Vijayalakshmi Sridhar.
The series was inspired by "the inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny” metaphor shared by Martin Luther King Jr. Blue fabric connects each artist, flowing like a river of color and honoring “wakpa,” the Dakota word for “river.” Traditional Tamil community performances occur by the river edge, and flowing blue fabric remains meaningful and symbolic.

113th Fine Arts Exhibition {Minnesota State Fair}
The “Great Minnesota Get Together” aka the Minnesota State Fair, remains a special place in my heart since my wife brought me there on a date in 2011. I’m proud to be apart of the largest fine art exhibition in Minnesota in 2024, the 113th Fine Arts Exhibition with Juror Brett Kallusky (photography). I appreciate the support of Brett Kallusky for his time and energy in jurying the largest exhibition in the state. Also, special thanks to Jim Ross for the framing (Ross Frame Shop).
This photograph remains special to me, as it is the same county fair which served as the summer highlight for my mother-in-law. The Mahnomen County fair remains the oldest and smallest county fair in Minnesota, and the barn pictured was designed by Cass Gilbert, the same architect as the Minnesota Capitol building in Saint Paul.
After weeks of planning, a mural-sized photograph was produced on June 30, 2023 at the Mahnomen County Fair— a summer highlight for many agricultural youth in the region. This photograph included over 75 participants from the community— including over a 25 members of the White Earth Nation— which agreed to serve as reciprocal, active participants in the photographic process.
Juror's Statement:
"I spent nine hours reviewing 939 submissions with the task of narrowing them down to 112 accepted works. When reviewing the submitted photographs for the MN State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition I found it relatively easy to pick the strongest, initially. Those were photographs with thoughtful compositions, excellent technical skills in terms of color balance or tonal range, lighting, and compelling content. It was relatively easy to reject the works that lacked those qualities too. I spent the most time digging into the last 40 accepted photographs.”
About The Last Fair series
After the Ramsey County Fair in St. Paul, Minnesota was canceled in 2021, I asked fairgoers at other fairs what they would miss most if it were their last year. A common response was the 4-H animal shows, highlighting deep-rooted connections between communities and agriculture.
Rural communities in the U.S. are undergoing significant transformations, with the number of retiring farmers increasing while new farmers are on the decline in Minnesota. As a parent, I am troubled by what this means for the next generation’s understanding of farms, sustainability, and stewardship of the land, especially in the face of climate change. These worries, coupled with the dwindling interest in agriculture among children, motivate my artistic endeavors.
The shift from small family farms to large monoculture operations has had a profound effect on rural America, with county fairs being one of the casualties. Once a vibrant showcase of diverse livestock, some county fairs now see sparse entries in competitions once fierce. Despite diminishing appeal of county fairs to today's youth, these events remain crucial in passing on life lessons and agricultural traditions.
Drawing inspiration from the works of Dutch painter Pieter Bruegel and American folk artist Grandma Moses, I use a large format camera and studio lighting to capture the essence of contemporary agrarian practices at these remaining country fairs. Through the lens of “in-camera photography,” I aim to shed light on the evolving face of American farming and the importance of preserving its heritage.
Artist Talk {Blanden Art Museum}
I cringe at the thought of me on video… especially giving an artist talk. However, I realize for everyone I photograph, they are equally as vulnerable. I share my heart and inspiration and answer lots of audience questions behind my work in this live artist talk recorded on May 4, 2024 (Star Wars Fans: “May the 4th Be With You”) at the Blanden Art Museum in Fort Dodge, Iowa. No Holds Barred.

Masur Museum of Art {solo exhibition}
Juried exhibitions— while expensive and time-consuming— can pay off. I just never thought it would lead to a paid solo exhibition.
Here’s that story: in 2019, prints from The Unchosen Ones series were exhibited as part of the 56th Annual Juried Competition Exhibition at the Masur Museum of Art, juried by Catherine Futter (Director of Curatorial Affairs, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art), where I received Honorable Mention. I kept in touch, starting with a little thank you note (handwritten). Fast forward a few months, I offered to donate a print for their collection that was published in National Geographic (Kol and Annabelle). The print was unanimously approved by both the collections committee and Board of Trustees and became part of their permanent collection.
Four years later— as a direct outcome of conversations which began with a juried exhibition— The Unchosen Ones touring exhibition hangs on the same walls.
Artists: never underestimate the power of your projects and how patience and persistence can make dreams come true!

Blue Ribbon at the Minnesota State Fair!
This week starts the “Great Minnesota Get Together” aka the Minnesota State Fair, a special place in my heart since my wife brought me there on a date in 2011. We enjoyed the animal and people watching and loved the creative activities building and fine arts exhibition. A few years ago we entered a friendly competition of entering the events. She won a blue ribbon for her pickles. And this year, I won mine.
R. J. Kern and Juror Kristine Heykants at the 112th Fine Arts Exhibition at the 2023 Minnesota State Fair with the First Place photograph.
I’m proud to share this blue ribbon (first place) photograph, Live Action Role Players, Blue Earth County Fair, Minnesota, 2022, at the 112th Fine Arts Exhibition at the 2023 Minnesota State Fair— the largest art exhibition in the state. Kristine Heykants, the photography juror, writes in her criteria statement:
I am looking for images that give witness to the breadth and depth of human experience in a way that is unexpected, with the desire to assemble a collection of images that represents photographic practice in Minnesota in 2023 in a holistic and inclusive way. Within the context of the State Fair where artists are limited to one entry, there is the added challenge of creating a statement or narrative in one image. I am excited to see pictures that make me want to learn more about the subject and the photographer.
Special thanks to juror Kristine Heykants, the participants who offered trust in front of my camera, The Photo Touch for printing, Jim Ross framing, Penn Barnes for transportation, Matt Steaffens for lighting assistance, Zach Rinehart’s leadership at the Blue Earth County Fair, and the support of my family— all essential ingredients required to create this photograph:

About the series:
The Last Fair showcases summer animal contests, aspiring to enhance awareness in the changing face of American pastoral life. “If this was the last year of your county fair, what would you miss most?” I asked this question at over a dozen fairs, in response to the Ramsey County Fair (Minnesota, USA) remaining canceled since 2019. “The kids with their animals,” I heard. I considered how joy isn't fully appreciated until gone. Small agrarian communities in the U.S. are changing, and the county fair isn’t necessarily the highlight of a kid’s summer the way it used to be. The 360-acre family farm has grown to over 10,000 acres, which has had a huge impact on rural America. County fairs are among the casualties. Although there is evidence that this way of life is disappearing as kids leave the farm, the crisis of climate change and a concern for both sustainability and stewardship of the land point to a path for survival for agricultural practices and traditions. Using a large format camera with studio lighting, I follow a photo documentary approach, not allowing myself to composite images, remove elements, or rely on artificial intelligence (AI). Orchestrating a photograph requires months of planning— and a hefty dose of patience and a sense of humor.

The Making of an Exhibit
Curious about the making of an art exhibit? Sue Bruns highlights advice about how I prepare for an exhibit (ARTICLE HERE >>), sharing the exhibit process from the Watermark Art Center, from start to finish, including how an exhibit is selected, exceptions to rules, a glimpse into the installation process, and programming ideas appreciated by grant funders (with photos by Annalise Braught).
Watermark Art Center (Solo Exhibition)

Homage to Nadar
Moments after this photograph was created on July 16, 2022, Michael Tauer (right) was declared Supreme Champion Showman at the 2022 Redwood County Fair in Minnesota. This was the last year of 4-H showing for the family, a bittersweet experience, according to Michael’s mother, Kris. Left to right: Morgan, Jeff, Kris and Michael Tauer.
The photograph was published recently in the exhibition, Time, juried by Michael Behlen, and featured in Analog Forever magazine (online). View the works here >>
This tintype photograph serves as homage to Nadar (Adrien Tournachon, French, 1825 - 1903) who photographed prizewinning animals at the agricultural competitions in the late 1850s, early 1860s. The photographs serve both artists and breeders, as they document fine specimens of horses, cattle, etc.

Summer Art at Burnet Art
“Summer is a great time to visit art museums, which offer the refreshing rinse of swimming pools - only instead of cool water, you immerse yourself in art,” writes Jerry Saltz.
Dip your toes into the art pool back room at Burnet Fine Art and you’ll find to two special photographs from 'The Unchosen Ones' series special— exhibition prints from juried shows. Exhibitions and curation form the backbone of photographic art. These framed photographs have earned frequent flier miles:

A thought to ponder as you float in the art pool from Jerry Saltz: "Billions of photos are shot every year, and about the toughest thing a photographer can do is invent an original, deeply personal, instantly recognizable visual style.”
